I have noticed that (at least in pur case) any project member can indeed update the project status. This is different from what it is said in the help section where it states that “Only the project owner can update the project’s status and adjust the project’s progress chart”
This may be a silly question, but have you assigned a project owner then? It could be if there’s no owner, anyone can update?

Ah, in that case, it does seem to be that anyone can update this. I would set the expectation in your team that only the official project owner can update the status.
