Project Roles: Please create options for how to view project role information/items

  1. What you’re trying to do: I would like the option to view the project roles as the primary item with assignees as the secondary item.

  2. What you’ve tried so far: The current roles structure has primary information based on “members” as the initial information entry. I currently add a member and then list the various roles they perform (often 4-5 roles); however, you have to hover over each member to see what roles they are assigned to try to find the role you’re looking for.

  3. What’s not working or confusing: The current state for member role information hierarchy is identify the “member” then add “role(s)”. Due to the limited space allowed for display of a members role(s), when a member has a long role title or multiple roles, there is often only partial display of the full role name or additional roles. This makes it difficult to quickly identify assignees for roles. Additionally, if you want to find out who is assigned to a specific role, you have to hover over every members icon and read the list of roles trying to find the role you’re looking for.

Recommendation: Organize information based on roles instead of members.

  • Allow complete display of each role individually with roles automatically added to the “Project Roles” section of the Overview tab at project inception to provide consistency in the role titles used in the project and facilitate rules that automatically change task assignee if the task role changes.
  • Allow for adding new project roles directly to the “Project Roles” section of the Overview tab after project inception.
  • Allow changes to the view to display by role or by member, but if display is by member set view of the role list for the member to display the complete list of a members roles.

Thank you!

Hi @Bamboom
Thanks for laying this out so clearly. Today, roles are still member-first, so there’s no way to fully switch to a role-first view or avoid the hover limitation. A few simple workarounds teams use are: create a “Roles” section or project where each role is a task assigned to a person, or add a custom field called “Role” so you can filter and search by it. This makes it much easier to see who owns what without having to hover over each person. You can also add your Product Feedback here: https://forum.asana.com/c/forum-en/product-feedback/20
