Project Folders (sub-teams)

Curious if there’s been any progress on this. I understand the theory that a PM software isn’t a “File Storage” location like Dropbox. BUT - how many of us work with projects that contain files, documents, etc that are relevant to the project? We are an engineering firm and just demoed Asana for a month - not a single positive outlook due to this lack of functionality to organize and store our relevant information. One big catch all of files that we can’t even read the name is beyond frustrating.

Would love to see this ability as well to attach files and documentation that is relevant, such as Scope of Work documents, overall Project Plans, etc where we don’t have to create a “Task” and can also sort accordingly.

Please, please, please add more functionality here.

It’s silly to even have the file tab. When working with graphics you can attach hundreds of files of varying stages and it is near impossible to know which ones are good and not by looking in the file view.

Viewing attachment upload details when we hover over the attachment file names would be extremely helpful. This is applicable to Overview tab attachments, task attachments as well as all the attachments displayed in the Files view of the project.

This would be especially useful when we have a task/project with multiple attachments and we are trying to locate a specific file.

Hello @Andy_L
interesting idea
I have also found this feedback request thread that might be interesting for you: File folder and view options

My operations are about to become really big and complexe and I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to manage all that without better possibilities to categorise like monday or other tool offers. I’m heart broken…

RP - A sad entrepreneur

This is a need for teams especially when we work on quarter basis.

So this post was created in 2017 and there still isn’t an option to create folders to organize stuff? I don’t see how this crucial feature is not an option. Is there some other way to do it because I’m getting too many projects or to do lists? Or another to do list software that has folder options?

I have the same issue. It feels crazy that Asana cannot implement a simple folder structure. How do big companies use Asana if this isn’t an option? We’re a small firm and we’re all getting lost within Asana because of the multiple projects. I would like to have the following organization with the ability to expand and contract each subsection (e.g., Financing Projects, Tax Projects) as you would do in any email or document folder structure:

Accounting Team
Financing Projects
Financing Project 1
Financing Project 2
Financing Project 3
Tax Projects
Tax Project 1
Tax Project 2
Tax Project 3

The structure didn’t come out in my reply. I would like to have
LEVEL 1 - Accounting Team

LEVEL 2 - Finance Projects
LEVEL 3 - Financing Project 1
LEVEL 3 - Financing Project 2
LEVEL 3 - Financing Project 3

LEVEL 2 - Tax Projects
LEVEL 3 - Tax Project 1
LEVEL 3 - Tax Project 2
LEVEL 3 - Tax Project 3

Adding my request here. We are a small shop and use Asana for production of flyers, briefs, research, etc. We desperately need folders for files that are housed within projects. If we can’t get folders, a document list (rather than a tile view) would go a very long way.

We’re a small team working with Asana to keep a lot of disparate plates spinning for a dozen or more very different clients.

Our projects are one per client, each task is a job, each subtask is an actionable SMART task to get the job done (in simplest terms).

The files tab in each job has become a repository for each client, would it be possible to have some way of applying filters and sorts to this view, in a similar manner to the list, board, &c views?

e.g sort by date, size, type, name
filter by type - multi-select?

A nice-to-have!

Hello @David_Ruder,

It would help to show a symbol next to a task name if there is an attachment to the task or subtask. For me this will reduce a bit, the need to sort and add folders to the “Files” section because then the attachments can be found by clicking on each task name.

Just coming to this thread and echo the others.

At a minimum, could there be some sort of nesting or breadcrumb attached to each file and a search feature? And honestly, a better list view would be better too. Google Drive, OneDrive, etc., all have the option to toggle between a list item and thumbnail view. The current thumbnail view isn’t doing it for me.

I feel that the most glaring weakness of Asana is the lack of any defined options to establish a project hierarchy. Currently, the only way to group projects is by establishing teams (if you are a premium user). However, even that can get very cluttered.

When kicking off a large projects, it would be fantastic to break it down into multiple sub-projects rather than sections. That will reduce clutter and allow users to hone in on sub-projects. Currently, sections, though useful, are not collapsible, so projects can get very lengthy.

Furthermore, a user should be able to drill into a sub-project and see a defined breakout of the sections, tasks, and subtasks.

Thank you.

That’s precisely why they created portfolios; and they made it available to higher tier indeed which could be understandable

I also wanna +1 for subprojects and subteams…it is simply a good way to group things together that relate without the overhead of looking into a folder. Also subteams would be good for access provisioning.

Welcome, @Emily_McCluhan,

I’ve merged your post into an existing topic where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the Vote button.

If you weren’t aware, Teams are a kind of folder for projects, and Portfolios are “virtual folders” with a lot more flexibility and features and offer an unlimited hierarchy.

Thanks,

Larry
