Project custom icons are broken - is there a fix?

The custom project icons don’t look right for me. When I use a standard icon, it’s fine, but the selection is very limited, so I wanted to upload my own.

So the preview looks fine too: the icon is shown on the background for both light and dark mode. I’ve specially chosen PNG images with transparent backgrounds.

But in reality, the icons look different. And because I’m a fan of dark mode, the black on black is hard to see.

As you can see, I’ve got both color and image set for this, but the color doesn’t show?

I just want the icon to look like the preview, but wondering if it’s broken?

I’m not sure if this is the same issue, but I’m noticing a background color on my custom icons after the latest update. I can’t seem to remove it and it’s totally destroyed my custom icon/color-coding system!
