Lost our Templates in Asana Workspace - Need Help!

My team and I had a number of saved Templates that we use monthly. These templates are for projects that are repeated annually (same month, different year). We use our templates not only for future work but also use them as task level training docs where all the specifics of each task are listed. In addition, we use these tasks for historical knowledge by keeping an example of the historical work in each task. So, as you can imagine, lots of work has gone into this effort over the past couple of years!

This month as our team began working on creating new projects using these templates, they are unable to locate the historical templates. In our initial note to support, they basically advised us that Asana doesn’t randomly delete data/tasks. Well, we are not sure if that holds true in this case.

We are hoping that Asana keeps multiple back ups and these templates can be recovered.

Reaching a human by phone seems next to impossible.

Any help and guidance to move this along quicker would be terrific. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Taran

Welcome to the forum.

So the templates your created are not listed under the team anymore?

Danni

Hey @Danni_VanguardCC

Thank you for the welcome.

That’s correct. The previously created templates are MIA and no longer available to any of our team members.

Hi Taran,

Do you have a superadmin that can use work access mode?

Hi @Taran, welcome and sorry that you’re running into this.

A few quick checks:

  • Check team templates — open the team where they lived, click New project > Templates, and look under both Team and Organization tabs.

  • Search by name/keywords — filter for Projects and look for anything with “Template” in the name.

  • See if it was converted — sometimes a template gets turned back into a regular project or moved to another team.

  • Check Deleted/Archived — recently deleted templates can often be restored, or they may have been archived.

  • Duplicate from past projects — if you created projects from those templates earlier this year, duplicate one and re‑save it as a new template.

  • Audit Log (Enterprise) — admins can scan for delete/move events around the date they went missing.

If none of that turns them up, it’s time to reach out to Asana Support so they can dig into the workspace data directly. Here’s the easiest path: Support link. I can also submit this for you. Let me know if that helps.
