Linking templates directly to teams

Digging into the forums, it appears the change in how Asana views teams has resulted in projects created via a template no longer being associated with the project team, despite the project team being linked in the template.

This is an incredibly frustrating and disappointing development, as we use this team-based logic in a variety of ways. Since the team field still exists within the template, I do not see why the projects created with that template cannot be automatically associated with that team, rather than the projects not being associated with any team and the projects having to be manually updated. When we have project managers creating 10-20 projects from templates at a time, that auto-linking is an important workflow.

I understand this has been discussed previously, but the thread from back in April was automatically closed.

In template settings, the team is described as the team with access to the template. Separately, templates let you:

  • add a team as project members so they’re added right away
  • auto-add projects created from the template to a portfolio

So if the goal is for each new project to automatically inherit the project’s team from the template, that isn’t described as part of the documented template behavior today.

The closest built-in workarounds are using team project members for access and using a portfolio to automatically group all template-created projects. If the need is specifically automatic team association on the new project itself, this looks like solid product feedback that others can upvote as well.
