It would be really great if Asana could update options for task dependency to include more flexibility. Right now is everything is set in a finish to start dependancy. My team has many tasks that are actually a finish to finish or a start to start dependency. Right now we just choose to not show that dependency on the timeline view as it is too challenging to adjust the schedule as everything looks red when we overlap task days. It would also be great if when adjusting schedul on timeline view it took into consideration the different dependencies before moving a task date. .

1. Finish to start (FS)
Activity A must finish before activity B can begin or B can’t start until A has finished

2. Finish to finish (FF)
Activity A must finish before activity B can finish" or B can’t finish before A is finished

3. Start to start (SS).
Activity A must start before activity B can start or B can’t start until A has started

4. Start to finish (SF)
Activity A must start before activity B finishes or B can’t finish until A has started

@Andrea_Richards
These are great suggestions. But Timeline in asana isn’t the best way to manage schedule and task dependency at this stage. Either an integration to an 3rd party or using a Gantt chart using MS project can be considered at this stage. 🙂

Here is another topic relating to Timelines which sheds light on different issues with timeline in Asana.

> [@Question about Auto-shifting dates for dependent tasks](https://forum.asana.com/t/question-about-auto-shifting-dates-for-dependent-tasks/99320):

> Thanks @anon5798578 When we move the task to a later date the dependent task moves. However, when i move it to an earlier date, the dependent task doesn’t move flawlessly. What works: My Task 1 finishes on Thursday Nov 5. Task 2 (dependent on Task 1) begins on Friday Nov 6. Now if I move the Task 1 to Next week Wednesday Nov 11, Task 2 automatically moves to Thursday Nov 12. What doesn’t work: After above step, now if I move the Task 1 back to Nov 5, Task 2 moves to Monday Nov 9, instead of F…

I agree, I believe the Timeline will probably stay simple for a while and if you need a powerful Gantt, use another tool in addition.

so is there any way to add task dependency options such as finish to finish and or for example, schedule task B to start one month before Task A finishes?

Asana only has direct dependency, not timed dependency.

Add the option to anchor the tasks to one another so when you complete a task early, it pulls all dependent tasks forward to keep the finish-to-start relationship. It does this if you move a task later in the timeline but needs to do the same if you finish early or move a task up. It takes a lot of extra work to rearrange the tasks in a project when you have someone get done early or make a change to duration of a task.

HI @Brad_Wegner, welcome to the Asana Community Forum 👋🏻

Thanks for taking the time to provide this feedback! 👏🏻

Currently, a change on a precedent task’s date will update the date of dependent task only if it causes an overlap. So, moving your precedent task’s due date forward won’t shift the dependent tasks date.

In the meantime, if you select both tasks on the Timeline, you can move both at the same time!

I hope this is something our Product Team can implement in the future 🙂

Finish-to-Finish feels like the most common and useful next level of sophistication without going the full PM tool capabilities.

Is there any Product Team appetite to support Finish-to-Finish?

I am the sole project manager on my team and I am working to implement a critical path and innovation timeline into Asana to support the team’s growth. It currently feels like the team loves Asana for all other project, task items and meeting agendas, but I am having difficulties getting it to smoothly work for timeline and scenario generating.

In past PM work and with other tools to make quick changes it has been a massive time saver to put in a dependency for a task and a duration and have it auto populate. It feels very repetitive to have to put in a dependency and then also put in a start and finish date. I would like my tasks to start immediately after their dependency and don’t want to have to update every line item if one task shifts.

Thanks!

Did you have a look at this already: [https://asana.com/guide/help/tasks/dependencies#gl-auto-shifting-dates](https://asana.com/guide/help/tasks/dependencies#gl-auto-shifting-dates)

On the timeline view you can easily drag and drop tasks and move them in bulk as well: [https://asana.com/guide/help/premium/timeline#gl-viewing-timeline](https://asana.com/guide/help/premium/timeline#gl-viewing-timeline)

Thanks Andrea - this is helpful! I think I am aligned to how this part works, but when i have an original task input with many tasks, my concern is more around manually having to input start and finish dates for each task. It would be nice if you put in a dependency that the task would autopopulate with a start date that is automatically after the completion date of the blocking task . For example if task A is from Jan 1 - Jan 14 and Task B takes 1 week and is depending on Task A . I would be nice to be able to input a length of 1 week and it auto fill a start and end date. It would save a lot of time and allow you to alter task durations and create a complete timeline much more quickly.

FYI this is exactly how the **Dynamic Duration** workflow type works in our [Flowsana](https://asana.com/apps/flowsana) integration.

Hi @anon55884633,

While it’s tightly integrated with Asana, it is a separate independent product and is a separate cost (after a 30-day free trial period).

Advising Premium Asana users to use other 3rd party software if we want something as basic as Finish to Finish Functionality in our project management tool is quite unhelpful. This should be added to Product development list with Asana Engineers and implemented.
Users expect a single one stop shop solution for project management from Asana.
Finish to start dependencies turn the timeline display into a scattergun dogs breakfast.

Posting in Product Feedback is definitely the right move, the community is just trying to help while Asana decides if they will do something and when.

@anon41024217 is a member of the community, they don’t work for Asana, just like I don’t, and we try to help as much as we can for free, please respect the hustle 🙂

It would be great if more tasks could have industry standard dependency options. Start to Start, Finish to Finish, Start to Finish, Finish to Start… it goes a long way for most of my projects. “block” and “blocking” are okay if you want to be niche about it but they’re not as useful.

This post is 2 years old. Has any progress been made on this?

Is Asana planning to integrate this into timeline and dependencies?
