First of all, I really appreciate the new “Search in Project” feature—it’s super helpful to quickly filter tasks within a project.
Here’s where I’ve noticed some challenges with the current behavior:
The first time you use the shortcut, it opens the search field and lets you type in your filter.
If you then click on a task (or anywhere else in the project) and try to use the shortcut again, it doesn’t take you back to the search bar. Instead, you have to manually click into it.
If I run a search and press Escape, the search is cleared (which is great). But if I click somewhere else first and then press Escape, the search doesn’t clear.
Together, these make the workflow a bit clunky when you want to refine or clear your search multiple times.
Suggestion:
Pressing the shortcut should always re-focus the project search field so you can immediately edit or start a new search.
Pressing Escape should consistently clear the search, regardless of where you clicked beforehand.
Thanks for reporting your feedback on this new-ish feature and the current gaps in expected behavior in great detail @Esteban_Giannini! And also thank you @Richard_Sather for flagging to make sure Sara and I see it
Sara and I are both just getting back from late Summer holidays and will discuss in an upcoming 1:1. Also don’t be shy in asking us for an update if this gets lost in Forum notifications!
@anon50834620 will share a full update, but given I updated the status to “In Development” I at least wanted to acknowledge we’ve prioritized a fix here!
Hi @Esteban_Giannini , I appreciate you sharing this feedback and brought both suggestions back to my team.
Good news: Now, when you click out of the search box and use the keyboard shortcut, it will re-focus you into the search field! Appreciate you catching this bug for us.
ESC is actually working as intended. The focus needs to be within the search input for a user to clear the input for accessibility reasons. It would be difficult to understand what the user actually wants to escape if their focus was removed from the input and then they hit esc afterwards.
@anon50834620@Garrett_Knoll - Thank you so much for such a quick fix on this! Awesome job! Sara, I agree with your point about ESC needing to stay connected with the focus object. The part that was a little frustrating before was that when you searched, then opened a task, and closed the task details, the focus on the search would be lost. As I just tested now, it keeps the focus on the project search after opening and closing task details, which allows you to quickly ESC the search. Really appreciate the improvement, thank you!
