How to display the team name in Asana’s My Tasks?

I’m new to the forum and have been searching for an answer but haven’t found anything yet. My marketing agency uses Asana, and we’ve set it up so that each client has its own Team. However, in My Tasks, I can only see the Project that each task belongs to—not the Team.

This creates confusion because some projects share the same name across different Teams (for example, multiple “Social Media Management” projects). Is there a way to display the Team name alongside each task in My Tasks?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Hi @ZoranB, welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, there isn’t a native way to display the Team in My Tasks at the moment. However, one workaround would be to set up a global custom field for the Team Name (if your plan supports this). Rules can also be used to populate the custom field. Also, be sure to add the field from the library to your My Tasks.

Another option would be to rename your projects to include the Team name (e.g., “Client A – Social Media Management” vs “Client B – Social Media Management”) to help distinguish them.

While this isn’t a perfect solution, I’m marking it here to elevate the workaround for future reference.

Best,

Jeremy

@Jeremy_Long thank you for your prompt and helpful response. I thought about the second solution, but I’m also curious about the first. I can’t figure out how to populate the custom field. I don’t see this option when setting up a rule. Am I missing something?

@ZoranB you would need to create the custom field as a single select with an option for each Client/team. Be sure to add it to the Org library and My Tasks. Then the rule would be: when a task is added to a Client A project, change custom field to Client A. You would need to bulk select and update existing tasks with this information.

If you have a large list of clients this could be also be done as a text field (rule shown below). Either option would require the addition of a rule in each client project.

@ZoranB, In addition to @Jeremy_Long’s good info, be sure to show the Projects column in your My Tasks if you’re embedding the client name as a prefix to every client project, the option I like best.

Also, to explain why Team name isn’t available, a task could be multi-homed in projects in multiple Teams, so it’s not a single team necessarily.

Thanks,

Larry
