Hide completed subtasks

In a sad turn of events I quit using Asana ages ago but stayed subscribed to get notifications so I continue to get reminded of what NOT to do: ignore customers and users who love so much of the product and don’t even give them the respect of communication.

@Josh_Kalsbeek,

Sorry to see you go.

Asana actually has a robust process (which is documented elsewhere in the Forum) and highly respects customer input, it’s just that:

Thanks,

Larry

What gives. Please implement this incredibly long-standing and basic request.

I’m sorry you see it that way, and I don’t think it is fair to put it this way.

Although there are a lot of feature requests that I would love Asana had implemented, I haven’t found a software company that strikes a balance between forwarding their own vision and listening to their customers.

Also, I think there has been plenty of communication from Asana in this thread.

Is there a possibility that Asana developers can add functionality within tasks that allows the user to minimize completed subtasks within a Task? The way my team uses Asana is we have new tasks entering a pipeline of different phases, each with required subtasks added to individual tasks as they progress through.

As the user marks subtasks completed, the Task advances through the phases. It would be great to add functionality that allows the user to minimize completed subtasks such that only the uncompleted subtasks show up under each task for efficiency in view. Thanks!

Welcome, @Vincent_Homium,

I’ve merged your post into an existing topic where you can click the title to scroll to the top and vote by clicking the purple Vote button.

Thanks Larry. This is helpful and can work as a solution. Ideally there would be a way to keep completed Tasks in entire board view while just hiding/minimizing the completed subtasks within a Task as well but that does seem to work

I´m rather new to the asana world, so sorry if I missed something here. But my summary of this is, that filtering completed subtasks works in list view but not in board view and asana sticks to the opinion, that is is a great idea, correct ?

Any idea why this remains an open issue?
Given the size of the need, the lack of progress must indicate an almost impossible complexity.
Or perhaps no-one is listening?

It kills me that this still isn’t a feature, it make using subtasks a nightmare and is one of the biggest reasons I would consider switching away from Asana.

Could we at least get an official response on whether this is coming or to give up?

This might be a case of “we are not saying we won’t do it, but this isn’t on the roadmap, and we re-visit the idea regularly”. Asana has a few of those topics, they simply don’t answer those on the forum.

It makes using subtasks “in a specific way” a bit hard indeed. We always make sure our clients deploying Asana know the limits of subtasks, including the inability to hide completed subtasks. Having so many subtasks that it hurts to not being able to hide them to me reveals that maybe you are using subtasks too much in this use case? how many do you have on tasks? :scream:

Hello - it’s 2025 … after 8 years do we have any updates on this or any developments so far? I love asana and this is the only thing that’s keeping me awake ( i have a lot of recurring tasks and seeing all the completed subtasks with the task is driving me crazy) please please … 0_o

I agree. For example, a similar Asana Task feature, ‘Dependencies’ already behaves this way. Completed dependent Tasks are hidden in Task detail view by default, with a link to ‘Show Completed Dependencies’. It would be great if SubTasks followed the same pattern.

Would love to see this implemented natively—completed subtasks can really clutter the view when you’re trying to focus on what’s still active. A simple toggle would make a big difference.

Yep, we definitely need this feature. Tasks and Subtasks are the most flexible tools in Asana; it is great that you can cross-tag them to projects. In reality my teams use “Tasks” as projects in many cases, as Project organization in Asana is pretty limited (Portfolios are clunky and difficult to view). So, not being able to filter out completed subtasks really clutters everything up.

All it takes is one recurring subtask to create a mess!

Just throwing my hat in that we need this feature. The management of nested subtasks is impossible with this tool, and this is just one of the reasons why.

I would like to nominate this thread for the longest and most time consuming example of a missed opportunity by a “productivity” company. Since 2017 people have been asking for a filter on subtasks. The most basic of functionality that already exists in the platform for tasks. I revisit this thread every time I need to delete 1000s of subtasks after my carpal tunnel flairs up from clicking “Load more subtasks” 50 times to get to the end of a daily recurring subtask list. And if I click into one by mistake I have to start over. Please. Please Asana, please listen to the ~32k views on this thread and end our pain by adding this one simple feature so I can stop considering alternative platforms. Thank you for your consideration.

+1 for this feature at task level or at least put the finished tasks at the bottom of the list. would be a great help
