Has anyone else noticed a change in how bullet and numbered lists behave in task descriptions over the last week or two?
Until recently this worked like any normal rich text editor. I could start a list anywhere in a description and the cursor stayed put and nothing else was affected. Sometime in the last week or two that changed.
Now, if a task description already contains an inline image and I start a bullet or numbered list with Cmd+Shift+8 or the toolbar button, the cursor jumps to the next line and the existing image gets selected and written over. The image is simply gone, with no warning, and it does not show up in Deleted Items, so the content is lost.
It is easy to miss depending on the state of the field. If the field has no other lines in it yet, you may not notice anything. But if you already have multiple lines in the Task Description, Project Description, or any other field, the cursor popping to the next line will highlight an inline image and write over it. This is especially likely if you use Task Templates that start fresh tasks with multiple lines already included, which is where I keep hitting it.
To reproduce:
- Open a task description that already contains an inline image and multiple lines of text.
- Put your cursor near the image and start a bullet or numbered list, using either Cmd+Shift+8 or the toolbar button.
- The cursor jumps to the next line and the existing image gets selected and written over.
Honestly this is incredibly frustrating, because no other text editor I use does this. Google Docs, Obsidian, Notion, Evernote, and Microsoft Word all let me start a list without moving my cursor or wiping out content that is already there.
I reported it to support. They were able to reproduce it but called it “expected behavior” of the rich text editor and logged it as a feature request. I have a hard time believing that, since no other editor behaves this way, and this is clearly new. It did not do this two weeks ago, and it seemed to appear around the same time as some other larger updates, for example the change where subtasks now show parent project and fields in the task pane ( Subtasks now show parent project and fields in the task pane ✨ ). My guess is it is a bug that got rolled up with a recent release rather than an intended change.
I am on Chrome on macOS, and it happens in both the desktop and browser apps.
Is anyone else seeing this since the recent change? And is there a way to follow a fix?
