Feature Request: Inherit URL/text custom field values from dependency tasks via Rules

Hi Asana team,

I’d like to request an enhancement to Asana’s Rules engine: the ability to automatically copy URL and text custom field values from a predecessor (dependency) task to its dependent tasks.

The specific pain point: we use URL custom fields to link each task to its associated assets — raw footage, source scripts, reference docs. In a multi-stage production workflow (e.g., shoot → edit → publish), each downstream task needs access to the same asset links as the upstream task it depends on. Right now, there’s no way to propagate those links automatically. We have to manually copy URL field values across every dependent task at each stage, which is tedious at scale and introduces error risk.

The feature we’d love to see:

  • A Rule action: “Copy [field] from dependency task” — triggered when a dependency is added, a dependent task is created, or a dependency is marked complete
  • Support for URL and text field types specifically, in addition to standard custom fields
  • Optionally: a “sync” mode that keeps the downstream field updated if the upstream value changes

This would be particularly valuable for content production, creative ops, and editorial workflows where asset links (footage, scripts, briefs, approved files) need to travel with the work as it moves through each production stage. Today, teams either duplicate that data manually or have to leave the asset context behind — neither is a good outcome.

Asana’s dependency system is genuinely powerful. Closing this gap would make it much more useful for metadata-heavy, multi-stage workflows.

Thank you for considering it.

+1, I’d specifically want the comment-on-dependent variant
