What I’m trying to do:
I’d like to use emojis with skin tone variations in task names, comments, and project descriptions to better reflect diversity and personal expression in my team’s workspace.
What I’ve tried:
- Setting a default skin tone in macOS system settings (via the emoji picker)
- Copy-pasting skin-toned emoji variants directly from external sources like Emojipedia
- Testing across multiple browsers
What’s not working:
Regardless of what I try, Asana renders all emojis in the default yellow. It appears Asana’s emoji renderer overrides any skin tone preference set at the OS or input level.
I found a forum thread from 2020 raising the same issue, but it was closed without explanation after a brief acknowledgment from the Asana team.
This matters because emoji representation is important to many users, especially in team environments where people want their communication to feel personal and inclusive. Many major platforms (Slack, Notion, Google, Microsoft) already support skin tone variants.
Ask:
Could Asana either (1) respect skin tone characters already encoded in Unicode, or (2) add an in-app skin tone selector to the emoji picker? Even a basic implementation would go a long way.
