This is a pretty reasonable idea, and could also be extended to the available options in single/multi-select custom fields as well. The 14 available colours sounds like a lot, but it is often not enough for any portfolio/list of reasonable complexity.
Ideally this would just give the user the option to opt to enter a hex code or similar to define the colour to be used.
