We would like to use a dashboard to measure our Q1 targets agains Q1 results, but currently the dashboards do not allow us to select a custom field as the Y axis

Is the custom field you are trying to add to the chart of your dashboard added to your custom fields library?
If possible, it would help if you could attach a screenshot of your chart editor pane.
