Can Asana rules be triggered by aggregated metrics like total estimated hours?

Hey everyone!

I’m trying to automate some project monitoring, and I have a use case I’d love your thoughts on:

I’d like to trigger a rule when the total estimated hours for all tasks in a project changes, and then compare that total to a predefined limit (e.g., if total exceeds 100 hours, alert the project owner).

From what I can tell, Asana’s native rules don’t support using aggregated custom field values as triggers.

So I’m wondering:

  • Is this possible with any current tools or integrations?
  • Has anyone built a workaround for this, maybe using webhooks or external scripts?

Would appreciate any guidance or even creative hacks to get around this limitation!

Using Portfolio Rules, you can currently trigger when an aggregated value changes, but we are missing the right Conditions in rules to compare it with a target. So I am afraid you would be stuck for now.
