In Board View, is there any way to highlight cards (edge and/or shading) when there has been a change in status such as a new comment or new document added. Notifications in email seem to get lost, especially with threaded conversations.

There is not such capability. As far as status changing is concerned, you can always create rules that have:
Trigger: Attachment added
Action: Change status to “In Progress” - With a certain color coding that correlates with the stage your project is in.
You can do the same for when someone comments too!
