Assign Custom ID / Project Number to tasks only, not subtasks

Hi! I’ve recently added the ID custom field in my project to start add ID numbers to my tasks within my project. Why is this custom field not showing up when I go to create a rule where it assigns the number to the tasks only, not to sub-tasks? What should the rule look like for this (note, the custom field isn’t showing up in my rule customization either…)?

An ID custom field won’t work as a rule trigger the way a normal select field does. ID custom field values are immutable and generated when a task is added to a project.

As a workaround, the usual pattern is:

  • use a single-select custom field added to the project
  • make the rule run when that field has the right value
  • keep the rule scoped to the project so it applies to tasks in that project

If the field you’re trying to use is an ID field, that’s why it may not appear in the rule customization UI. If you need numbering plus automation, you may need a separate field or reporting structure for the automation piece.
