Appending information in a task description via a manual rule

Hi Asana Community,

I’d love to see an “Append to description” option added as a standard automation action, without needing an AI rule.

Currently, if you want to add content to an existing task description (rather than replacing it), you have to use an AI Studio rule, which consumes AI credits. A simple append action doesn’t require AI to execute - it just adds predefined text to whatever is already in the description field.

Use case: When a task is added to a project, automatically append a standard template to the task description, preserving any content already there from the form submission.

This would be a great addition for teams who want to standardise task information without using up AI credits on something that doesn’t need intelligence to execute. My current rule will run multiple times and consume 2745 credits per time, so usage will need to be monitored.

Hi @Rebecca_Hassett :waving_hand:

I believe you can actually already do that via the “set task description” action.

To preserve the existing content, use the “Variable” “Task > Description”.

To add a variable, click on the “+”

If that solves your issue, please mark my question as solution.

I was thinking the same thing as @Arthur_BEGOU . I’ll have to check on that later.

However, I need to make sure I fully understand @Rebecca_Hassett 's intentions.

Thank you @Arthur_BEGOU !

It has worked, even though Dash told me it couldn’t be done, and even present in the rule now is ‘The description will replace the existing task description’ which put me off when I attempted it last as I thought that meant it couldn’t be done, but adding the divider is key.

You’ve saved me thousands (of credits!), thank you! Another added bonus is that I can also maintain my tables this way, as the AI rule is plain text only.

I will mark as a solution :white_check_mark:

Thanks for your help too @ka_nishiyama !
